Saturday Night Live really makes the holiday season the best time of the year by delivering some of its best skits.
Throughout December, “SNL” usually has a variety of skits that celebrate and mock the Christmas season.
The show is currently on a brief hiatus but will return on December 11th with first-time host Billie Eilish who will also appear as a musical guest. The singer is likely to add to the show’s long list of Christmas carols.
Before the last two episodes of the year, watch some of the best vacation-themed skits of the past few decades.
1. Eddie Murphy’s “Home for the Holidays”
“SNL” legend Eddie Murphy made a triumphant return to the show in 2019, repeating some of its hilarious characters like Gumby and Buckwheat. But one of his best skits was a family vacation sketch. While Murphy is giving a heartwarming speech to his relatives, the scene shows various family members arguing and irritating each other during their stay.
2. Matt Damon’s “best Christmas ever”
Any parent who woke their kids early on Christmas morning can refer to this 2018 sketch. Similar to Murphy’s sketch, host Matt Damon happily remembers spending Christmas with his family when he is interrupted by memories of frustrating moments he previously had with his children.
During the clip, Cecily Strong says her daughter loves her playhouse and asks Damon if he was late building it. He grunts before a flashback shows him cursing and kicking the playhouse while struggling to assemble it.
3. “The Christmas candle”
Emma Stone hosted an “SNL” episode in 2016 that featured a Christmas carol about candles. In the music video, Stone, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon sing about making up the perfect last-minute gift for the holidays.
“It’s a candle / The same peach candle / Regifted ‘um the world in only a day / Thank you candle / The one true candle / The candle that we all get and then give away”, the ladies harmonize during the chorus as they dance together in the snow.
4. “Christmas child”
Ryan Gosling, who hosted the show in 2015, showed off his comedic skills in this fun sketch about a couple who confuse and terrify everyone at their neighborhood Christmas party when they insist Santa is real.
After the former actor Beck Bennett keeps saying that Santa Claus is not coming, Gosling sits on his lap and intimidates him in a gruesome tone.
“I don’t know why you’re doing what you’re doing, David,” says Gosling, using a broken candy cane as a weapon. “Do you think me and my baby are not good enough to meet Santa Claus?”
At some point Gosling yells: “Go and get Santa Claus!” Before Bennett rushes up the stairs and returns disguised as Saint Nick.
5. “The Sparkle Players Christmas Show”
This 2009 Christmas sketch is by far the most underrated on the list, but it’s definitely worth seeing host Taylor Lautner pretend she’s a member of a middle school show choir.
During one of the numbers Lautner dances awkwardly and sings “Santa Claus get down my chimney” with a strange accent. A spectator then throws him a basketball on his stomach before former actor Will Forte steps in as director.
Towards the end of the clip, Lautner walks across the stage and shows his best Michael Jackson impression.
6. “I wish it was Christmas today”
One of the most classic “SNL” holiday jingles, “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” was performed multiple times on the show. Horatio Sanz, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, and Tracy Morgan first got together to sing the song in 2000.
They last sang the song on December 17, 2011. Sanz jumbled his guitar while the others hopped along to the lyrics, which read: “I don’t care what your mom says / Christmas is just around the corner / I don’t care what your papa says / Christmas is full of joy. “
As the song continues, Fallon hits random notes on a keyboard, Kattan repeats a strange neck dance, and Morgan repeatedly wags his arms.
7. “NPR’s delicious dish: Schweddy Balls”
Moderator Alec Baldwin and “SNL” alums Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon can all be seen in this unforgettable 1998 sketch.
Gasteyer and Shannon play two NPR presenters who introduce a baker named Pete Schweddy. Baldwin plays Schweddy, who makes a famous Christmas dessert called “Schweddy Balls”.
The audience gasps and laughs constantly throughout the skit, while Gasteyer and Shannon compliment the Schweddy balls.
8. “D — in a box”
While Andy Samberg was an “SNL” actor, he was known for his digital short songs. 2006 host Justin Timberlake Samberg joined for the absurd track “D — in a Box”.
The couple sings about giving their wives a “special” gift. “I’m not going to get you a house in the hills / A girl like you needs something real / Wants to bring you something from the heart,” they joke before revealing their gift.
The gift doesn’t just work for Christmas. Samberg and Timberlake let the audience know that the gift is also suitable for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and any other holiday.
