Visitors to the San Diego Zoo were treated to a rare sight on Monday: the birth of a giraffe.
The calf was born around 3 p.m., and soon a crowd gathered to watch the infant stand up and take his first steps, a leap normally made in the first few hours of his life.
While an adult male can reach heights of up to 18 feet, newborn giraffes are typically close to 6 feet tall and weigh between 110 and 165 pounds.

“We got there around 2:30 am and when I came through the gate, a worker came through the gate and said, ‘I gave birth to the baby giraffe!’ So I hurried through the gate,” said Rosemary Bystrak Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park are regular and longtime contributors to NBC 7’s SoundDiego music platform, posting photos to their old colleagues.
About a hundred people were standing near the giraffe enclosure, quietly waiting for the baby to take his first steps when Bystrak arrived.
“Mom kept encouraging the baby, the baby kept trying and falling over,” Bystrak said, adding that the toddler made seven or eight such attempts over the course of an hour before, as she put it, ” he got stuck landing. “
A short time later, the baby was breastfed and at 5 p.m. mother and child went together to the private area of the animal enclosure.
