Broadway is back at the San Diego Civic Theater.

Tuesday evening, Broadway San Diego will open its first touring production since the coronavirus pandemic was shut down – the Tony Award-winning musical “Hairspray”.

Broadway San Diego general manager Vanessa Davis said it had been 625 days since the curtain fell on her last appearance.

“We’re excited to be going back tonight and starting Hairspray’s national tour,” said Davis. “It feels incredible to finally be able to welcome our audience again!”

As Davis mentioned, Tuesday evening will also be the opening night of the “Hairspray” tour, which was originally supposed to start last November but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Star Andrew Levitt, who plays “Edna Turnblad,” said he couldn’t wait to be in front of a live audience every night.

“It’s going to be really exciting to feel that energy,” said Levitt.

Levitt is best known for his alter ego “Nina West” from “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. He said it was an honor to play a role made famous by drag legend Divine, Harvey Fierstein, and even John Travolta.

“It’s a big moment for me,” Levitt told NBC 7. “It’s hard to put into words how much this means to me and how excited I am to be stepping on those pumps or those shoes or those slippers Character and celebrate it across the country. “

Levitt said the start of the tour in San Diego has special significance for the show as it is directed by Jack O’Brien, who not only won a Tony for the original production on Broadway, but also for many years as artistic director of The Old Globe in San Diego.

“Imagine how magical this trip will be when you start in San Diego. It’s like we’re bringing a little more magic and love to the streets, and that’s so exciting,” Levitt said.

“Hairspray” runs November 16-21 at the Civic Theater Downtown. For game times and ticket information, click here.
