Former San Diego councilor Barbara Bry announced Thursday that she was running for the San Diego Assessor-Recorder County Clerk.
Bry, a Democrat who would become the first woman to hold that electoral position, said she will bring the values of accountability, justice and transparency into a nationwide office that handles everything from assessing property taxes to issuing them of marriage licenses.
“It’s important to remember that our property taxes support education, mental health initiatives, homelessness projects, and other important programs,” she said.
She will seek to succeed the long-standing Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Ernest Dronenburg, whose third four-year term expires next year. Dronenburg is a Republican and was recently elected President of the California Assessors Association.
Bry served on the San Diego City Council for four years before campaigning for San Diego mayor last year.
She was defeated by then-MP Todd Gloria, another former member of the San Diego City Council, by about 12 percentage points. In the runoff election in November 2020, it received more than 270,000 votes.
While on the council, Bry was the first elected official to conduct an independent investigation into the city’s lease to acquire Sempra Energy’s former headquarters at 101 Ash St.
The city has paid tens of millions of dollars to lease the vacant lot, which cannot be occupied due to asbestos and other problems. The city is suing and being sued over the real estate business.
Bry also called for an audit by the Public Utilities Department after hundreds of consumers complained about excessively high bills.
A former Los Angeles Times journalist, Bry became a successful entrepreneur before turning to politics. She helped start several companies before running and winning her first choice for the city council in 2016.
She promised to use her background in technology and business to set up a special advisory committee to suggest ways to optimize access to public records.
