Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has just proven that he really is the People’s Champion.
The Jungle Cruise star, who was honored with the tribute at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards on Tuesday, December 7th, chose instead to bestow the title on two of his own heroes: Muhammad Ali and Make-A-Wish -Receiver Shushana.
Johnson initially accepted the award presented by his “drinking buddy” Jeff Bezos, but informed the audience that he did not consider himself an OG People’s Champion.
“For those who might know or those who don’t, the original people’s champion was the greatest of all time, Muhammad Ali,” said the former WWE star. “I first met Mohammed when I was a little boy and he was so cool to me. He was so nice and he was so funny. He was always wonderful to me.”
Johnson referred to himself as the “People’s Master” for his “bad guy” personality in the WWE, but later asked Ali’s wife for permission to use the title.

“She said, ‘He told me to tell you that you are the people’s champion, you deserve it, you are taking this title,'” thought Johnson. “Years later, to be here with you guys, you voted me People’s Champion, the irony has not escaped me because I realize that what it means to be the People’s Champion is so much bigger than me. You treat people well, you treat people kindly. You care for people. You include people, all people, all colors, it doesn’t matter. ”
The 2021 Comedy Movie Star continued, “The last time I saw Muhammed we were at a Make-A-Wish event and we granted both of our wishes. His last words to me were: ‘You keep rumbling’. ”
And with that, Johnson invited the PCAs-Make-A-Wish recipient Shushana to the stage in 2021.
“To be here tonight and to be with you, that is her wish. She has no idea what I’m doing, ”Johnson explained. “This is a total surprise. I met her earlier. I told her how proud I am of her story. She is a fighter, she has inspired her family and friends. I want to tell you how much you inspired me and everyone around you and certainly everyone here. I want to give you this because you represent all that it means to be a People’s Master – so this is for you. ”
People’s Choice Awards 2021 winner
Johnson cited Ali’s famous quote – “Serving others is the rent you pay for the room you have here on earth” – as the reason for giving Shushana the award. The 15-time PCAs nominee and two-time winner then presented the microphone to Shushana to deliver her own unexpected acceptance speech.
Shushana began, “First, thank you for that. I didn’t expect that at all. But I mean, thanks to Make-A-Wish in general. I just never expected such a good thing to happen. That’s crazy . I never thought that surviving anything could end up like this. ”
Johnson also dedicated his Comedy Movie Star win to co-star and nominee Emily Blunt in the early evening.
At the end of the evening, Johnson reminded the audience that “it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice”.
It’s clear that Johnson is a true People’s Champion, with or without a trophy.
