NBR Awards Name ‘Licorice Pizza’ Its Best Film of 2021 – NBC 7 San Diego

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” was named Best Picture of the Year by the National Board of Review.

Anderson was also named Best Director, and the film’s stars Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman were selected for their groundbreaking achievements in coming-of-age comedy. The National Board of Review is an organization of film enthusiasts, academics, and film professionals dating back to 1909.

Both Will Smith (best leading actor) and Aunjanue Ellis (best supporting actress) won for their performances in the Richard Williams drama “King Richard”. Newcomer Rachel Zegler received the title of best leading actress for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”.

Other picks included Ciarán Hinds for Best Supporting Actor for “Belfast”, Asghar Farhadi for the screenplay for “A Hero” and the best adapted screenplay for Joel Coen for “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, which was also selected for Bruno Delbonnel’s cinematography.

Disney’s “Encanto” won the best animated film; “A Hero” was recognized as the best foreign language film; Questloves “Summer of Soul (… Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)” received the award as best director and Jeymes Samuels “The Harder They Fall” as best ensemble “Fliehen.”

The award ceremony will take place at a gala dinner on January 11th under the direction of Willie Geist. Last year the National Board of Review selected Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” as the best film of 2020.
