With the growing number of COVID-19 cases related to the Omicron variant, the Mexican Consulate in San Diego is making a push to vaccinate more Baja California adults through the Consulate in Little Italy.
Since the beginning of November, the local consulate has been making binational efforts to vaccinate minors. There are now three events taking place in which minors from Baja California are driven to the United States for vaccinations. The consulate plans to vaccinate 450 minors by the end of the year.
But now the consulate is pushing to get more Baja California adults to get vaccinated or boostered on this side of the border.
NBC 7’s Allie Raffa spoke to a district overseer about how the district is trying to break red tape and give extra doses to our neighbors across the border.
Jorge Briseno, 42, accompanied his daughter from Tijuana to a consulate vaccination event on Thursday and decided to get a booster vaccination.
“Pfizer is very limited in Tijuana and I know Pfizer is here [U.S.]. It’s faster and easier, ”said Briseno.
While visitors to the United States must have a travel visa and proper immigration status, no appointments are required and no other immigration-related information is requested.
“You can come in, be comfortable and not be bothered with documents or anything, so I think it helps a lot to come to your own Mexican consulate and get the booster injections here,” said Miguel Hernandez.
Hernandez, who lives in Chula Vista, visited the consulate with two adult friends. All three received their booster shots.
Hernandez, who volunteered at the Chula Vista Vaccine Super Center earlier this year, was one of the county’s first residents to be vaccinated in March. He praised the consulate’s efforts and encouraged Mexican nationals to get vaccinated.
“Actually, I think they prefer to come here. It’s very accessible. It’s much more accessible than Mexico. There are complications, supplies and all that. There is better supply of medicine here. “
According to a consulate spokesman, the current vaccination rate in Tijuana is 80%. The vaccines are provided free of charge by the County of San Diego.
