A new group of volunteers will begin assisting the San Diego city leaders in some of their key decisions as newly appointed members of various city boards and commissions.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria recently announced placements to groups that touch a variety of topics – from tourism to housing to art and culture.
The Board of Directors of the San Diego Convention Center will greet a familiar face with the reappointment of Jaymie Bradford, Executive Vice President of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, currently deputy chief of staff on the District 4 State Compensation Committee, will also join the board. He is also the chairman of the San Diego County’s Democratic Party.
Carol Kim, the new chairwoman of the convention center, said the appointments come at a crucial time. The convention center recently reopened for events after serving as both an emergency shelter for the homeless and a shelter for unaccompanied migrant children. The board members are working on finalizing a new strategic plan that will focus on the continued safe return of events, employee retention and facility maintenance.
The San Diego Housing Commission will also join with the appointment of Melinda Vasquez, an attorney who chairs the San Diego Housing Coalition. In its latest strategic plan, the Commission prioritized several objectives, including maintaining and improving housing solutions, helping families, increasing self-sufficiency and promoting solutions to homelessness.
Imani Robinson, a Mountain View resident, has been appointed to the Arts and Culture Commission, which promotes and encourages the city’s support for arts and culture. A few months ago, the city approved sweeping changes to the way the city spends millions in art funding after a recent equity assessment showed that low-income neighborhoods earn far less than places like Balboa Park, Downtown, and La Jolla .
Long a advocate of the arts, Robinson has worked with her community as Chair of the Mountain View Advisory Council to host live events and organize beautification projects.
The youngest appointee was Colin Duong, who will join the recently reactivated Youth Commission. Mira Mesa, 17, has small business experience and hopes to help other young people become entrepreneurs.
In addition, the following dates were agreed:
Mary McKenzie, Elaine Cooluris and Mary Wolford will join the Accessibility Advisory Board, which advises city guides on accessibility issues.
Jimmie Slack and Paul Cooper were appointed, and Thomas Hebrank was reappointed to the ethics committee. Among other things, the commission enforces the city’s campaign, lobbying and ethical laws.
Sunday Gover and Nicolaz Portillo have been inducted into the Civil Service Commission, which helps regulate and oversee the city’s classified employees.
