SAN DIEGO (AP) – A TikTok star with nearly a million online followers pleaded not guilty on Monday for shooting his newly estranged wife and a man she was with in a high-rise in San Diego last week .
Prosecutors said Ali Abulaban secretly installed a bugging device on his 5-year-old daughter’s tablet device, and when he heard his wife and another man talking, he went into their apartment and shot them, the Union-Tribune reported.
After the shootings, Abulaban picked up his daughter from school, still armed, said Assistant District Attorney Taren Brast.
The details were disclosed during the indictment in the San Diego County Superior Court against Abulaban, who pleaded not guilty of two murders and multiple killings in special circumstances, the newspaper reported.
Brast said in court that Abulaban, 29, is a TikTok star named JinnKid with more than 940,000 followers on the social media app. His report includes comedy skits and imitations of the character Tony Montana from the 1983 film “Scarface”.
Abulaban’s attorney did not comment on the allegations during the hearing.
Police identified the victims as Ana Abulaban, 28, from San Diego and Rayburn Cadenas Barron, 28, from National City.
About two dozen family members and friends of the two victims filled the courtroom. Several of them sobbed as Brast shared details of the murders in San Diego’s East Village last Thursday.
Brast said Ali Abulaban confessed to detectives and accused his wife of cheating, even though the prosecutor said she believed Barron was a friend.
According to Brast, Ana Abulaban asked her husband to move out on October 18. He checked into a hotel.
Three days later, Brast said, Ali Abulaban snuck back into the apartment and ravaged it while his wife was away. He also installed the hearing app on his daughter’s iPad.
Hours later, Abulaban heard the app when he heard his wife and man talking and giggling, Brast said and ran back to the skyscraper. The video from a surveillance camera showed him walking out of the elevator into the apartment.
Brast said Abulaban shot Barron three times before shooting his wife in the head. Abulaban then called his mother and confessed, Brast said.
After picking up his daughter, he called the police while they were driving, and they arrested him 45 minutes later. His daughter was in the vehicle.
Judge Kimberlee Lagotta ordered Abulaban to be detained without bail. The judge also issued a protection order obliging Abulaban to stay away from his daughter, who is being cared for by the family.
