An 18-year-old student at UC San Diego died early October 23 after falling out of a bathroom window in a dormitory on La Jolla campus, San Diego county officials said.

The county coroner’s office reported October 24th that Aaron Fan was at a party on the eighth floor. After a noise complaint, a campus officer entered the room and saw Fan walk into the bathroom, the report said. A short time later, witnesses saw Fan fall from the bathroom window onto the floor.

Fan was taken to the Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was diagnosed with multiple injuries and pronounced dead.

Death came as the university was in the midst of its annual homecoming celebration that weekend.

“It is with a heavy heart that I write this morning to inform you that we are a member of the [John] Muir College Community Overnight, “said Muir Provost K. Wayne King in an email to students on October 23rd.

Muir is one of seven student residences at UCSD.

“As we work to better understand the circumstances and respect the privacy of our students’ families, I want to assure you that we are here to support one another,” said King. “Let us speak respectfully of the dead at this tragic time. Let’s be kind to one another. Let’s be patient with each other’s emotions. ”

Some students said they had questions about the case.

“This is an incredible tragedy,” said Manu Agni, President of Associated Students at UCSD. “Everyone must respect the privacy of the victim and their family. But the university needs to be transparent about what happened and how it happened to make sure it never happens again. “

The campus police of the UCSD are investigating. ◆
