Here we go again. The coronavirus pandemic rocked the San Diego food and drink scene again this week as public health officials shut down bars, breweries and wineries that are not serving food due to rising COVID-19 cases in the area. Eater San Diego shares details on the impact of these closings and other top news from our food and drink scene during these turbulent times of COVID-19, including some new openings.
San Diego County closes bars and places curfew on restaurants
As San Diego County’s COVID-19 cases continue to rise, local officials ordered bars, breweries, and wineries that were not serving food to close again. The county also ordered restaurants to close by 10:00 p.m., with possible new regulations temporarily restricting indoor dining.
Although San Diego County was not among those ordered by the governor to close bars, county officials decided to do so anyway, as more COVID-19 cases are reported locally.

RakiRaki Ramen expands to Mira Mesa
These days, it’s not all bad news for the San Diego dining scene. Kearny Mesa’s popular RakiRaki Ramen is branching out to Mira Mesa with a new location slated to open by August. The Japanese restaurant has a menu similar to the original shop on Convoy Street and serves a wide variety of ramen, including the signature chicken ramen, as well as starters, salads and rice bowls.
Mexican Cantina comes to La Jolla
The local hospitality group behind Karina’s Mexican Seafood is opening Karina’s Cantina in downtown La Jolla this month. The new place will mainly serve seafood, from ceviche to tacos and burritos, and has a full cocktail bar. The place replaces Saffron Thai, which was closed last fall.
Mostra Coffee delivers North County Café
Voted Micro Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine, the local coffee company has just opened its second café – Pandemic and All – in the 4S Ranch community. Mostra Coffee is known for its support for the Filipino coffee industry and includes beverages inspired by classic Filipino desserts.
New start of the Hot Chicken Shop in the Liberty Public Market
The team behind the Mastiff Sausage Company has taken over another food stand in the Liberty Public Market and plans to launch its version of the hot chicken trend in Nashville later this month. Called Fluster Cluck Hot Chicken, the menu includes fried chicken sliders, chicken and cheese fries, and chicken and waffles. Oh, and if you’re wondering what hot chicken is in Nashville, let’s help.
