SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Bird Global announced Friday that it has launched an accessible mobility program in the city of San Diego that enables residents and visitors with disabilities to reserve and use “accessible vehicles” such as power wheelchairs.
In cooperation with the mobility scooter and wheelchair rental company ScootAround, Bird says that customers can access the fleet of barrier-free vehicles via the Bird app. A toll-free service will also allow customers to ask questions, according to a company statement. According to the company, when the vehicles are delivered, the drivers receive personal instruction on how to operate the vehicles.

“Bird’s commitment to improving sustainable mobility access for all means working with industry experts whose mission is our own, including Scootaround and Easterseals,” said Rebecca Hahn, Bird’s chief corporate social responsibility officer. “Together with Scootaround, we are able to offer people with disabilities a trustworthy, personal transport service on demand. This is incredibly important to our team, and we believe it is just as valuable to the communities we serve. “
The company’s electric scooters have been a common sight in San Diego since 2018, and an e-bike program also kicked off at San Diego State University earlier this year.
