SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men’s basketball program is halfway through its nine-game road trip when it visits San Diego for the first time in 26 years on Sunday, December 5th, after Cal Poly (2-5), who after a 64- 55 defeat at California Baptist (December 2) resumes action. Four of Cal Poly’s seven games to date – including three defeats – have been determined by four points. After four of the last five games, San Diego (4-5) fell last in the state of Fresno (December 1) with 63-43.

CAL POLY VS SAN DIEGO: In the first encounter between Cal Poly and San Diego in 23 seasons last year, the toreros scored a 70-61 victory at the Mott Athletics Center on December 16. Cal Poly leads the all-time series (9-8) while San Diego leads the Division I series (4-1), which dates back to the first match between the two programs on January 17, 1958. Sunday’s game marked Cal Poly’s first visit to San Diego since losing 77-73 to the Toreros on February 27, 1996.
THE LONG AND CURVING ROAD: Cal Poly’s current nine-game road trip is the longest on the program in twelve consecutive away games in the 1970/71 season (December 12 to January 22). Cal Poly also played nine Straight Road Games to open the 1968–69 season.
COLVIN CLIMBS SCORING CHART: Averaging 16.0 points in Cal Poly’s last four games, second striker Kyle Colvin remains third in the line-up with 11.3 points per evening. Crowned with a first college double double that included career best points (28) and rebounds (10) against Idaho (November 24), Colvin has recorded three games with double-digit goals this season. He also enjoyed an 18-point performance against Santa Clara (November 19). After missing last season due to injury, Colvin is Cal Poly’s second leading scorer at 48.1 (25-for-52) percent and the third-largest rebounder with 4.4 per game.
KOROMA CONTINUES FOR THE EVALUATION: Junior striker Alimamy Koroma, one of Cal Poly’s top two scorers for the second straight season – driven by four double-digit goals including his career best 23-point against Nicholls State on Nov. 22 – is eighth Place among the Big West players with 13.0 points per game. Koroma, who added 19 points against Sacramento State (Nov. 15), also leads the Cal Poly and ranks third among Big West players with a field goal mark of 54.4 (37 to 68) percent. With 23 double-digit scoring games in his career, Koroma averages 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per 54 college trips.
TAYLOR ON THE BOARDS: One of only two Mustangs to double-double to date after scoring a top 15 cal poly and taking 10 rebounds against Sacramento State (Nov. 15), Junior Guard Trevon Taylor maintains the rebound lead of the program 6.0 boards per night. After nine rebounds against Nicholls State (November 22) and California Baptist (December 2), Taylor – a transfer of James Madison in the off-season – has started six of seven matchups with an average of 6.6 points per game.
THE CONCLUSION: Four games in a Cal-Poly jersey and three games with double-digit points for graduate guard Jacob Davison, who goes into Sunday’s matchup in San Diego with 11.5 points per night as the program’s second-best scorer. Davison was an off-season transfer after helping Eastern Washington in the 2021 NCAA tournament. He scored 14 points on his Cal Poly debut on Nov. 9, before ending with a season high of 19 points against North Dakota State (Nov. 12). Through 113 college appearances, Davison averages 12.5 points per game.
LOOKING AHEAD: Cal Poly will play the first two of his three regular season games outside of California when he visits Portland State (Saturday, December 11th) and Portland (Monday, December 13th). Both matchups tip over at 7 p.m. for Cal Poly, who is visiting Portland State for the first time in 12 seasons and Portland for the second time in 17 years.
ETC.: Since moving to Division I prior to the 1994/95 season, Cal Poly improved to 44-1 against non-Division I programs with an 86-53 home win over NAIA Westcliff (Nov. 9) … a 75-72 Overtime loss to Nicholls State (November 22nd) was Cal Poly’s first ever meeting against the Colonels … Second striker Kyle Colvin was named Cal Poly to the SoCal Challenge All- after an average of 19.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Tournament Team (Nov. 24) Named Third… Cal Poly finished third in the first SoCal Challenge (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) With a 67-63 win over Idaho (Nov. 24).
