Carlos Santana has successfully undergone heart surgery and is canceling several Las Vegas shows scheduled for December.
In a video message released on Wednesday, Santana said he asked his wife to take him to the hospital on Saturday because of a problem with his chest.
“I’m going to take a little time off to make sure I relax and rest,” said Santana.
Michael Vrionis, president of Universal Tone Management, said the 74-year-old guitarist had had “unscheduled heart surgery,” but did not provide details.
The 10-time Grammy winner’s heart surgery and recovery resulted in his concerts at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino being canceled until the end of the year. His management announced that he would resume his performances in January.
“Carlos is doing fantastic and is keen to get back on stage soon,” Vionis said in a statement. “He deeply regrets that this ‘speed bump’ made it necessary to cancel his upcoming performances.”
Earlier this year, Santana released the album “Blessings and Miracles,” which includes collaborations with Rob Thomas, Chris Stapleton and others.
