The prosthetic tail dolphin who starred in the “Dolphin Tale” films may be battling a gastrointestinal infection, officials said.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium said in a press release on Sunday that employees noticed on Nov. 1 that Winter was not eating and behaving abnormally. Initial blood tests showed the possible infection.

The aquarium’s care team monitors the condition of the 16-year-old dolphin around the clock, according to the press release. It is located in the central basin of the aquarium, which does not offer public underwater observation. Visitors to the aquarium can see winter on the terrace on the third floor over the water.

“Her survival story has inspired millions of people around the world, and she continues to show a strong, determined and combative spirit,” the press release said. “Our dedicated staff will continue to monitor you closely during this healing process and offer you the highest quality of treatment.”

Winter was just two months old when her tail got caught in a crab trap near Cape Canaveral on Florida’s Atlantic coast. Dolphin Tale, released in 2011, documented Winter’s recovery and her journey with a prosthetic tail. Three years later, “Dolphin Tale 2” also played Hope, another rescued dolphin cared for by the Clearwater Aquarium.

Aquarium officials said no other animals or marine life in the facility showed signs of disease.
