Japan’s Gundam base is coming to the United States for a short time, giving American Gunpla farmers the rare chance to purchase some exclusive models.
Bandai is bringing Japan’s famous Gundam Base Store to the US, but for a limited time only.
Per Crunchyroll, Bandai announced that it is opening a special Gundam pop-up shop in San Diego, coinciding with the upcoming “Special Edition” of Comic-Con, which will be held in the city from November 26th to 28th on the subject of the chain’s flagship stores in Tokyo and Fukuoka. The chain hosts special events related to the series, showcasing rare and unique models, and most importantly, sells exclusive merchandise not available anywhere else. The pop-up shop will bring some of these unique merchandise, including rare and exclusive Gunpla model kits, to the US for the first time.
Gundam Wing fans should plan a trip to San Diego to pick up the exclusive Master Grade Epyon EW from Gundam Base, which showcases Zechs Merquise’s iconic cell phone suit with a new metallic finish. For Universal Century purists, the store will also offer the transparent MG Gunner Zaku Warrior and the exclusive Gundam Base variant Master GradeRX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 3.0, which has a unique blue color scheme that matches the store’s logo. The pop-up shop also offers collectors the option to pick up the RX-78F00 Gundam bust model, which was a limited edition sold at the Gundam Factory, Yokohama’s famous Gundam museum.
While Gundam Base’s businesses appear to be doing well, the same cannot be said of the shop’s sister business, the Gundam Cafe. The anime-themed restaurant chain announced this month that it will close all of its locations across Japan within the next year. The announcement came as a surprise to many Gundam fans as the restaurant recently announced new updates to its menu. Although no official reason for the closure was given, fans have speculated that the restaurants, which were popular tourist attractions prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, faced a sharp decline in business after travel restrictions went into effect in 2020.
Even so, Gundam fans can still look forward to a lot: Netflix recently revealed a first look at the upcoming live-action film Gundam, which will be produced by Legendary Pictures and directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts of Skull Island. Animation studio Sunrise also announced three new Gundam anime projects: an Iron-Blooded Orphans spin-off called Uror Hunt, a film remake of the Cucuruz Doan’s Island episode of the original Gundam anime, and finally a brand new series featuring entitled Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. which will premiere in 2022. The studio also announced that it is working on the sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway, which will feature the return of the original series Bright Noa.
