Believe it or not, we checked the calendar and yes, summer is almost over. Not that this means too much to us here in America’s Finest City – our virtually perfect weather means we can always go out and enjoy new things to see, eat, drink and do. So if you are preparing for (light) sweater weather, you can bookmark these facilities that should arrive on our shores before the end of the year. From Riviera Maya-inspired Mexican cuisine to Cajun soul food, a new boutique hotel and more, here are nine fall openings we can’t shut up about:

Little Italy
Opening date: End of August 2021
Risen from the ashes of beloved El Camino in Little Italy, SDCM, the people who brought us Kettner Exchange and The Waverly, Camino Riviera celebrates the spirit of the Yucatán coast. Owner Matt Spencer and the owner of El Camino teamed up on the design, offering a sensory experience that evokes the beauty of Tulum while paying tribute to the original location. Chef Brian Redzikowski’s menu features Riviera Maya favorites such as grilled Alaskan king crab tacos, grilled oak prawns and Spanish octopus. Beverage directors Leigh Lecap and Eric Johnson have created a similarly inspired cocktail menu that, according to Lecap, “is interspersed with the flavors of Yucatán … Cochinita Pibil, Papadzules and various moles such as Pipián and Mole Blanco that serve as taste guides and inspiration”.

August, includes live music, local craft beer and cocktails, entrees on the tray, and a Hawaiian roast pork. All for free with no RSVP required!

From the ocean
Opening date: Beginning of September 2021
Sarah Jaeger, Bohemian Alchemist’s new café is not your typical coffee house. With the first and only sand brew system approved by the San Diego Health Department, their beverages are based on Turkish coffee, a smoother, silkier counterpart to traditional espresso. If you are not familiar with sand brewing, a cezve (Turkish coffee pot) is placed on very hot sand, which heats your coffee, tea or hot chocolate to a boil, creating a rich taste and a pleasantly thick mouthfeel. French press, pour over and cold brew are also available, as are coffee and tea blends, herbal drinks and seasonal iced teas. The space itself is inspiring – a low Turkish seating area with a colorful, silky tent roof, handcrafted Art Nouveau tables, antique and eclectic pieces that have been converted into counters and shelves are inviting and serene. And since coffee and tea only beg for sweet treats, you will want one of the lovingly baked cream scones, muffins, shortbread biscuits, fruit cakes, caramel and apple hand pies and more.
