IRVING, TX (December 7th, 2021) – The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation and KSWB-TV FOX5, Nexstar Media Inc.’s television broadcaster for the San Diego area, announced today that the foundation will donate US $ 10,000 to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help relieve hunger and Combat food insecurity.

The San Diego Food Bank and its North County Food Bank Chapter provide nutritious food to the needy, advocate for the hungry, and educate the public on hunger-related issues. Together, these organizations make up the largest hunger relief program in San Diego County. In 2020, the San Diego Food Bank distributed 63 million pounds of food.

One in six people in San Diego County is food insecure, which means they don’t always know where their next meal is coming from. For children, the number is even more worrying: every fifth child suffers from food insecurity. The Food Bank serves an average of 550,000 people in need in communities across San Diego County each month. The majority of these people are working families with children, seniors living on very tight budgets, even college students and military families (nearly 40,000 active military personnel, veterans, and their families each month). Less than five percent of the people cared for by the Food Bank are homeless.

San Diego-based FOX5 has had a long-term relationship with the San Diego Food Bank for many years, supporting the organization with food campaigns and fundraising. A number of people are volunteers at the Food Bank, and Scott Heath, Vice President and General Manager of FOX 5, has served on the Food Bank’s board of directors for the past seven years.

Casey Castillo, Interim CEO of Jacobs & Cushman Food Bank of San Diego, said, “We are very grateful to the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation for supporting our important mission in the community with this generous donation of $ 10,000. Scott Heath, Vice President and General Manager of FOX 5, and his team have helped the Food Bank support the Food Bank through volunteering, financial support, and by stimulating the community to support the Food Bank through numerous community campaigns, including our annual Holiday Food Drive partnership, great food bank supporters. Donations are vital for the San Diego Food Bank this holiday season as we continue to feed a record number of families facing food insecurity and still recovering from the financial repercussions of the pandemic. On behalf of the staff and families of the Food Bank volunteers, we thank the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation and KSWB-TV FOX5 for giving back to the community and helping our fellow citizens in need in San Diegan. “

Commenting on the Nexstar Media Foundation’s donation, Heath said, “FOX 5 has worked with the San Diego Food Bank for many years to raise awareness of food insecurity and encourage people to donate whenever they can. As a board member of the San Diego Food Bank, I am grateful for the foundation’s generous contribution. This donation will provide 50,000 meals for those who need them most. Giving back to the communities served by Nexstar television networks across the country is at the core of the company’s mission and that of FOX 5, and we are honored that the Nexstar Media Foundation is making this donation. “

The mission of the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation is to contribute to and work with public charities and nonprofits to improve the communities in which Nexstar Media and its subsidiaries do business. The foundation was originally established in 1958 and donates approximately $ 350,000 annually.
