NWSL: Jill Ellis explains San Diego Wave Futbol Club’s name, the ‘idea of it just being non stop’

The NWSL 2021 playoffs are well underway, but that didn’t stop the off-season from taking shape as the league’s 12th team announced their official franchise name. San Diego Wave Futbol Club is the official nickname of California’s newest coastal team. The team will play at their temporary home, the Torero Stadium, in the spring of 2022, and their crest and permanent venue will be announced at a later date.
The organization expanded earlier this year when the league announced that San Diego – not Sacramento as previously rumored – would be the 12th NWSL team in 2022. The team is owned by Ron Burkle, a three-time Stanley Cup champion co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Burkle’s longtime business partner Matt Alvarez will serve as vice chairman.
The club’s biggest buzz since its inception in the league has been the announcement that Jill Ellis, former US women’s national team head coach and two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup winner, will become the club’s president.
“A lot of it was connecting with groups, soccer groups within the community to spread names and ideas,” Ellis told CBS Sports of the club’s new name.
“The first questionnaire went out – what does San Diego mean to you? How does it feel? What resonates for you? Influence of the water obviously as it is a coastal city. “

Prior to the unveiling of the club’s official name, Ellis hired great staff to help her sail the club toward her 2022 goal. She hired former USWNT team administrator Molly Downtain as the club’s new general manager and later hired former England international and Manchester United coach Casey. a stoney as head coach.
“This is an exciting next step in our process to kickoff the team next season,” said Stoney.
“Having lived in San Diego for some time now, I believe our name strikes the perfect balance between representing this beautiful city and our desire to be a relentless force on the pitch. Wave FC becomes a source of city pride for the community on and off the field. ”
The Wave Futbol Club will be the very first NWSL franchise to use the Spanish translation of Futbol on its name. It should reflect and connect both the scenic and the cultural connections between the club and its city.
“I’m someone who grew up in a country where every team was either United or City,” joked Ellis. “So it was different, but I think it really captures the essence of this incredible city and area.”
“Like my daughter said, you don’t want to be a soft name, and I love the idea that the wave can be so strong and so powerful and that idea that it’s just uninterrupted.”
