San Diego County notifying restaurants of $4.5M in permit fee refunds

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – San Diego County began opening restaurants on Thursday for the period March 16, 2020 through March 15, 2020.
The class action settlement applied to all restaurants and limited food preparation facilities that paid or had to pay annual permit fees to the Department of the Environment, Health and Quality of the San Diego District.

It offers a 50% refund of annual approval fees to restaurants who have paid and 50% credit to those who owe annual approval fees. It also waives late fees for early payment of approval fees due during that period, provided the fees are paid within 12 months of the original due date or by December 31, 2021, whichever is earlier.
The amount is on top of $ 118.9 million the district board of directors has already allocated to restaurants to offset the impact of California’s home-stay orders and local public health amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“Restaurant owners and their employees have suffered significant losses from COVID-19,” said Nathan Fletcher, chairman of the board of directors. “As the industry rebuilds, this refund will help restaurants recover their economy and on top of the tens of millions of dollars given to them during the height of the pandemic.”
Sarah Aghassi of the county’s Land Use & Environment Group added, “The restaurant industry is a valued and important part of our local economy and has been seriously affected by the pandemic closings. We look forward to continuing our partnership as our economic recovery continues. “

To date, the county has allocated $ 123.4 million to specifically support restaurants, including:
- $ 12 million in county fee-related actions in support of restaurants, including postponing health permit fees, non-increased DEHQ fees, and waiving some restaurant fees;
- $ 90.2 million to fund the Great Plates program, which worked with restaurants during the pandemic to deliver meals to participating seniors from May 2020 through July 30, 2021; and
- $ 16.72 million in support of restaurants and limited food preparation facilities through the Small Business Stimulus Grant program.
