REGION – The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department warned the public to beware of a warrant phone fraud recently reported by six people.
The would-be victims received a call from someone claiming to be Lt. Hartman issued a number that appeared to be the sheriff’s department.
The caller told people that they had missed a court hearing and had to come alone to the sheriff’s headquarters at 9621 Ridgehaven Court immediately. One call recipient reported that the message sounded like it was recorded.
“This is a scam. To be clear, the Sheriff’s Department doesn’t employ Lieutenant Hartman. The Sheriff’s main office is also closed on weekends,” said a statement from the Sheriff’s Department.
“Pending arrest warrants cannot be clarified over the phone or at the sheriff’s headquarters,” the statement said. “Warrants can only be clarified by the court. Individuals with pending arrest warrants are encouraged to report to any of the sheriff’s court facilities Monday through Friday during business hours.
The statement notes that these scams are playing on people’s fears. “You want to be a law-abiding citizen and not end up in jail, so panic and reveal your personal information or money to try to defuse the situation.”
