‘Inconstancy’
Visual art
Carlsbad’s PHES Gallery is opening a new exhibition, “Impermanence,” which features the work of four artists whose art explores the temporary nature of life and art: Andres Amador, Michelle Kirtis Cole, Wendy Maruyama and Kathi McCord. I especially love Northern Californian artist Andres Amador’s style of landscape art, where he finds an empty beach cove between the tides and rakes intricate vortices and patterns in the sand and takes an aerial view before the surf washes them away. The work of local woodworker and artist Wendy Maruyama is also fascinating – her “Tag Project” consists of a series of large-format sculptural installations made from simple paper tags that are labeled with information about Japanese Americans who were imprisoned during World War II.
As part of the exhibition, the gallery will also host a series of events next Wednesday with Tibetan Buddhist monks from Gaden Shartse Monastery, including talks and a sand mandala creation next Wednesday, followed by the “dissolution ceremony” next Saturday.
Details: Vernissage Sunday, December 5th from 2pm to 4pm. After that, the gallery opening times are Thursday to Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. or by appointment. PHES Gallery, 2633 State St., Karlovy Vary. For free.
Denja Harris: “Soft”
Visual art
Mortis Studio was founded in 2016 by Taylor Johnson and Dustyn Peterman as a creative agency for art, animation, video and graphic design. They’re opening a new studio in Golden Hill this week with an art exhibition to kick off. “Soft” is a collection of works by local textile artist Denja Harris of Brown Acid Goods and will run from Friday through January 16, 2022.

Work by Denja Harris will be on view from Friday, December 3, 2021 at Mortis Studios in Golden Hill.
I love the way Harris plays with colors and shapes in their thick, carpet-like tufted fibers, and the patterns feel just as old-fashioned as they are modern and surprising. The opening reception is Friday, with food and drinks from the popular vegan TNT pizza.
Details: Friday, December 3rd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mortis Studio, 1038 25th St., Golden Hill. For free.
FlowerSong Press
The cover of “Dreaming With Mariposas” by Sonia Gutiérrez, which will be read on Saturday 4th December 2021 in the Centro Cultural de la Raza.
FlowerSong Press Reading by Californian authors
poetry
Looking for personal poetry? Don’t miss this lineup of ten poets from across California who all publish poetry collections under the same press (in the writing business they call this “Labelmates”).
FlowerSong Press is committed to promoting border areas and the voices of Latin America and the United States. The all-star evening at the Centro Cultural de la Raza includes poetry performances by Briana Muñoz, Sonia Gutiérrez, Fernando Albert Salinas, David A. Romero, Gina Duran, Matt Sedillo and many more.
Details: Saturday, December 4th from 7-9pm, Centro Cultural De la Raza, 2004 Park Blvd., Balboa Park. For free.
San Diego Children’s Film Festival
Film, family
One of my favorite parts of any comic con is the San Diego Children’s Film Festival, also because there are always seats and it’s a great opportunity to get away from the chaos. But once I’m there, it’s always a pleasure, packed full of sweet, short, cross-border works from film and animation. This festival debuted at the Comic-Con Special Edition last weekend, but will repeat – free to the public – on Saturday.
On my radar: “The Statue,” a film about an immigrant child trying to get his one line right in the second grade play on the 1:00 p.m. block; the beautiful, illustrated stop-motion “The Bird and the Whale” in the midday block; and the silly and heartwarming “ceiling” in the 10 o’clock block. The full schedule can be found here (scroll down for the December 4th listings).
Details: Saturday, December 4th, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the one-hour program. San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Ave., downtown. For free.
San Diego Pottery Tour
Visual art
This weekend the 14th annual San Diego Pottery Tour takes place, this year in a hybrid format. View the work of dozens of potters in person or browse their online galleries – in fact, two of the artists only show and sell their work online.
Here’s a handy ten-stop map between Spring Valley and La Jolla, and when combined with the online shop, it’s an easy way to preview and choose your favorite studios to visit. Some work that caught my eye: Anna Cosimini and Warren Bakley of Clay Associates in Normal Heights, Ashley Kim (online only), and Amy Threefoot Valeiras (La Jolla).
Details: Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5 Dec., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Various locations. For free.
‘Hope for the Holidays’: A festival of song with the voices of our town choir
music
The popular Voices of Our City Choir from San Diego will perform Christmas classics alongside a jazz-funk ensemble. The group was founded in 2016 to provide choral music and community opportunities for people homeless in San Diego – and they recently received America’s Got Talent “golden buzzer”. The organization also raises funds to help members find permanent housing.

More Music: North Park’s SoNo Fest and Chili Cook-Off are the venue for a dozen outdoor gigs this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., including Grampadrew, Chloe Lou and the Liddells, Scary Pierre and Low Volts. It’s free to enter, but tasting cards cost $ 22-25.

‘My lovely lady’
theatre
Broadway San Diego’s production of Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” didn’t open until Tuesday, with shows going through Sunday night. It’s the story of Eliza Doolittle and her extraordinary Cockney accent and the language professor (‘Enry’ Iggins) who takes her under his wing. Expect luxurious, intricate sets and costumes, and lots of recognizable jokes (“Women are irrational, that’s all!”) And tunes like “I Could Have Danced All Night”.
Joan Marcus
Broadway San Diego is hosting “My Fair Lady” at the Civic Theater, with shows through Sunday, December 5, 2021.
Proof of vaccination or negative COVID test within 72 hours is required. Masks are required indoors, except when eating or drinking, and note that the consumption of food and drinks is permitted in the theater.
Details: View information. Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (ASL interpreter) and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. San Diego Civic Theater, 1100 Third Ave., downtown. $ 25 +.
