The owner of Del Taco in Santee believes 99.9% of high school students who walk into his restaurant are great customers.
However, Duane Johnson, who turned down an on-camera interview for NBC 7, blames the 0.1% of Santana High School students for forcing him to close the restaurant’s dining room between 2:30 pm every weekday
“Most of the kids here are great,” said Chambers, who lives near the school and restaurant. “They are great kids. They are good children. You are very respectful. “
Chambers added that sometimes someone falls out of line and ruins it for everyone else. So Johnson said he would close his Del Taco dining room when the school bell rang at 2:00 p.m. and reopen it at 3:30 p.m. He said some of the teenagers were unruly and treated his employees badly.
“If that 0.1% comes in, it’s pretty bad,” said Deshawn Blue, who works in a shop in the Santee area.
Blue said he did not accuse Johnson of closing the inside dining area to deter students.
“A lot of kids come in and just start throwing things around and making noise and not buying,” said Blue.
“I think it’s awesome,” said Chambers. “He has to protect the other customers, other customers and his employees.”
What happens at the Santee Del Taco is not a unique situation. The Burger King in Lakeside has a similar policy if the school at nearby El Capitan High School is down. However, an employee at the establishment said they are not enforcing the closure every day.
The Santana High School principal declined to comment, but said the district would speak on behalf of the school. A spokesman for the Grossmont Union High School District said:
“Mr. Johnson is a great Santee business executive and the Santana High School administration values his dedication to the Santee community. The administration is aware of this issue and will continue to notify any parents of students who behave negatively or disrespectfully.” We need your partnership to stop this behavior. Meanwhile, Del Taco owner Johnson said the passage would stay open in the afternoon when the dining room is closed. He said he hoped to reopen fully once the small group began to behave better.
