Taco Shop Owner ‘Thankful’ for Opportunity to Serve Free Meals on Thanksgiving – NBC 7 San Diego

Two weeks ago an SUV crashed into their restaurant. Two weeks later, Frida’s Street Tacos in Escondido continued his plan to serve free tacos to people on Thanksgiving Day.

“We have been blessed with the support of many people,” said co-owner Gracy Ayala.

She said the fledgling restaurant will need support after it opens in 2020 amid the pandemic. To say thanks, Ayala and her husband Robert decided to prepare free taco meals for anyone who turned up on Thanksgiving Day.

“We are pulled up. They didn’t say anything. We just gave each other our food and drink and said, ‘Happy Thanksgiving’ ”, smiled Omar Delacruz, a resident of Escondido.

Many Frida employees also turned up to work for free.

“We were a little worried that it couldn’t happen because of all the things we had,” Ayala grimaced.

On November 11, a possibly stolen SUV plowed through their front door after hitting another truck right outside Fridas.

“It went all the way to our restaurant,” sighed Ayala. “It was devastating. I will not lie. “

The taco shop is still boarded up, but Frida’s staff continue to serve people in the parking lot, an outdoor dining area created during the pandemic.

Amazingly, the SUV was the second vehicle to collide with Fridas since it opened.

“Second time,” Ayala forced a smile. “It was exactly one year to the day and one day later.”

The two accidents almost a year apart only strengthened the Ayalas and their staff.

“You will pass out and get up right back,” said Delacruz.

Ayala said they couldn’t get up without the fellowship, which is why Frida paid them back on Thanksgiving.

“We are very blessed,” said Ayala. “I’m lucky enough to be able to help someone else.”

She said they spoke with the city of Escondido about installing barriers in front of their restaurant to prevent more cars from crashing into it.
