Thanksgiving travel at San Diego International Airport predicted to double from 2020

San Diego International Airport expects more than twice as many Thanksgiving travelers this year as last year.
Katarina Nelson and her pup Butters were some of those travelers. They flew to San Diego on Tuesday to visit friends for Thanksgiving.
“So you just have to be patient and be prepared most of the time,” Nelson said. “Not just with food and such, but have additional masks and everything with you, because otherwise it will feel chaotic because it is pretty full.”
She recommends that passengers flying with pets should prepare in advance as each airline has different requirements, and also pack snacks as some airlines do not offer food.
Katie Weaver and her family were in San Diego for the weekend and are driving back to Denver on Tuesday.
“It was a lot better than I thought,” said Weaver. “I thought there would be a lot of delays, long security lines and crowded areas wherever we go, but it went very, very smoothly and great.”
Tuesday morning had a steady flow of travelers, but Wednesday will be challenging, said Sabrina LoPiccolo, a spokeswoman for San Diego International Airport.
“We expect about 20% more passengers through the terminal than we saw on an average November day,” said LoPiccolo. “So most of the people we’re expecting will be flying on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after.”

Airport staff are constantly cleaning the heavily touched areas, and there are stickers on the floor to encourage social distancing whenever possible. There are also plexiglass stanchions in the check-in areas.
“Face masks are required,” said LoPiccolo. “There is a federal mandate. So even when you are outside, inside and on a plane, you have to wear a mask. “
LoPiccolo recommends preparing before your flight, especially when you get to the airport – and remember to bring your patience with you.
“Right now there is some traffic off the aqueduct (on State Route 163 and Interstate 5) so it has been delayed a bit,” she said. “Even if you want to park at the airport, we strongly recommend that you make a reservation in advance on our website san.org. So you don’t have to worry. You have your place. “
If you don’t already know the best way to get to the airport, there is a new free electric shuttle service that runs every 20-30 minutes, seven days a week.
“It’s called the San Diego Flyer and it picks up and drops it off at the airport, both terminals one and two and the Old Town Transit Center,” she said from the Old Town Transit Center and then jump on the San Diego Flyer and come straight to the airport . ”
The San Diego Flyer shuttle buses have a light orange branding with airplane symbols, the word “Flyer” on the side of the buses, and the SAN logo.
The EV shuttles are equipped with air conditioning, luggage racks and an ADA ramp.
