A week beginning Monday, restaurants in the city of Los Angeles will have to check indoor diners for evidence of COVID vaccination – a situation in the Bay Area that has sparked controversy after an in-n-out burger location cracked it Mandate.

So what happens to In-n-Out Burgers’ in LA when the local requirements go into effect?

The in-n-out company calls it “government handover” and says it is wrong to force its employees to be vaccination police.

It didn’t move in the Bay Area and had to suspend food inside in some places. There are a lot more in-n-outs in Los Angeles.

In-n-out burgers are recognizable as part of the California lifestyle, but now that restaurants are caught in a COVID controversy, supporters are taking sides.

“It is up to you whatever you want to do,” said Rick Rodriguez, regular In-N-Out regular.

Vaccine requirements don’t extend to take away, even inside with a mask, and this has been a workaround in Contra Costa County, where In-n-Out has multiple restaurants, the lines of which in some cases get even longer. Some even hold demonstrations in front of the store, holding signs and shouting, “Stop the mandate!”

When asked about this yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom chose his words carefully.

“I encourage everyone to take local health regulations seriously, and I encourage everyone to support companies that support the state,” he said.

After San Francisco temporarily closed the in-n-out at Fisherman’s Wharf, Corporate issued a statement describing the request as “overreach” and “intrusive, inappropriate and offensive.” But many customers say they don’t mind.

“If they don’t enforce, I’ll stop coming,” said customer Shirley Roberts. She said she’d be fine with drive-thru.

LA County is already demanding proof of vaccination in bars and a few other places – not restaurants or dining rooms – but the City of LA will begin enforcing it as the measure goes into effect one week from Monday.

The Irvine-based In-n-Out owns and operates all of its businesses so it is not a franchise ownership decision.

On Thursday, the company declined to comment on LA’s looming demands or to say anything beyond the earlier statement. But the way it is, In-n-Out has some time – a whole month. Although the effective date for the LA requirement is one week from Monday, enforcement is not expected to begin for another three weeks after that on November 29th.
