The holidays could look and feel different than last year, a welcome change. But while we are planning to meet with friends and family, many may be wondering what is the safest way to travel. By plane, train, car or even bus?
NBC7 spoke to a doctor about ways to stay safe this holiday season.
Dr. Kaiser Permanente’s Tseng recommends travelers to ask themselves a few questions before traveling.
“Are you going to a safer place? Or do you go to a more dangerous place, ”said Tseng. “When you know you are going to travel, what is the best way to control your situation? How can you best control your surroundings? ”Said Tseng.
Tseng said the car was the safest for transmitting Covid-19 for obvious reasons.
But many will travel by plane. Even if you are vaccinated, sharing an enclosed space for hours is always a risk.
“The air circulates even though you have HEPA filters. It’s still best to have the mask on board. “
The traveler Sarah Pistone prefers trains to buses. Especially during peak travel season, she told NBC7 when she drove to San Juan Capistrano via Amtrak at the Oceanside Transit Center.
“It’s a bit bigger and depending on how crowded it is sometimes it’s easier to stay away from people,” said Pistone.
Carlos Reyes says he always used the bus when he stopped driving. He stays pretty local and feels like it’s the safest for him.
“After the pandemic, most buses were almost empty,” Reyes said.
Travelers we spoke to say the train is the best way to distance yourself from others.
“I am disabled. I need space for my legs. And the bus doesn’t offer that, ”says Rratton Evris.
Dr. Tseng suggests researching the transfer rate of your travel destination. If it’s 8 or 9% and more, that’s considered very high, Tseng said.
He said knowing your community and your family’s vaccination status is a good starting point when planning your trip.
“The goal is to make sure everyone gets through this vacation safely and that you take care of each other,” said Tseng.
