Panic hit travelers at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport on Saturday afternoon after a gun was accidentally fired at the airport. The incident briefly stopped departing flights and caused travelers to flee and seek protection.

“I have no shoes at this point,” said Anna Viettry, a San Diego resident. “I have my laptop and phone that came out, but I was waiting for my bag.”

It was during a routine work trip that Viettry says she was trapped in the middle of a chaotic scene at the TSA checkpoint at the Atlanta airport.

“I thought it was someone dropping a trash can, so I really didn’t know until someone started yelling, ‘Get down, go,'” said Viettry.

At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, security forces were inspecting a passenger’s bag when he found a loaded firearm. The passenger, identified as 42-year-old Kenny Wells, then pounced on the gun, which she accidentally fired before escaping from the airport.

“You see a lot of people who just crawl and want to know what they don’t know,” said Viettry. “It’s so crazy to feel fear and nobody really knows what is happening.”

Hundreds of people run, crawl, and take cover.

“At some point we will all come out of the departure and arrival area,” said Viettry. “We come outside and I just find someone who is really nice. She’s facetiming her husband so I just hang out with her. I don’t have any shoes, my laptop or my cell phone with me.”

Viettry says she sat in one of the airport’s parking garages for two hours until airport officials gave the all-clear and resumed normal operations around 3:30 p.m.

“It just got me into the reality of what could happen and the risks associated with traveling and everywhere I go,” said Viettry.

As we embark on one of the busiest travel vacations of the year, Viettry urges travelers to stay vigilant.

“It’s generally nerve-wracking because you just don’t know what people are doing,” said Viettry.

Kenny Wells is still on the run with multiple arrest warrants, including the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
