The Gucci family is not happy with the way their relatives are portrayed in the new film House of Gucci. In a statement released this week, they said the narrative was “far from correct” and the filmmakers had not consulted them at all.

The Guccis, no longer connected to the global luxury brand of the same name, worried about the Ridley Scott film from the start. Now that it’s out, they are complaining about specifics, including the idea that Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted and jailed for hiring a hit man to kill Maurizio Gucci, is portrayed as a victim in a male-dominated company.

House of Gucci goes beyond the headlines of the 1995 murder and trial. Based on a book by Sara Gay Forden, it begins in the late 1970s and follows the relationship of Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and her heir Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) from advertising and marriage to separation and his murder. The story shows Reggiani as the Lady Macbeth type who helped Maurizio rise and take control of the company from his uncle Aldo Gucci (Al Pacino) and cousin Paolo Gucci (Jared Leto).

“The production of the film didn’t bother to consult the heirs before calling Aldo Gucci – who has been president of the company for 30 years – and the members of the Gucci family as thugs who were ignorant and insensitive to the world around them and completely made-up attitudes and behaviors ascribed to the protagonists of the infamous events, ”reads the family’s declaration.

They also said they reserved the right to “take all necessary steps to protect the name, image and dignity of themselves and those who love them.”

The Gucci family has not held a stake in Gucci fashion house since 1993 when Maurizio sold his remaining shares to Bahrain-based Investcorp. It was later bought by the French group PPR, now called Kering.

Scott has previously defended himself and his film against criticism from the Guccis, including Patrizia Gucci’s comment to The Associated Press that they “steal a family’s identity for profit”.

Patrizia Gucci is the daughter of Paolo Gucci and granddaughter of Aldo Gucci.

“You have to remember that one Gucci was murdered and another was jailed for tax evasion. So you can’t talk to me about profit,” Scott said in an interview with BBC Radio last week. “As soon as you do that, you become part of the public.”

A representative for Scott said there was “nothing to add”. The MGM studio did not comment either.

The family isn’t the only one close to the story and commenting on the filmmaking decisions. Designer and filmmaker Tom Ford, who was Gucci’s Creative Director from 1994 to 2004 and can be seen in the film, wrote an article for Air Mail comparing the experience to a hurricane.

“I have a hard time separating reality from the shiny, heavily varnished soap opera I saw on screen,” wrote Ford. “As with most films based on a true story, facts are changed, characters exaggerated , Schedules skewed – and who cares in the end while these changes make a great movie?

“I was deeply sad for several days after watching House of Gucci, a reaction I think only those of us who knew the players and the game will feel. It was tough for me that Humor and seeing the camp in something that was so bloody. In real life none of that was camp. It was absurd at times, but in the end it was tragic. “

The fashion house cooperated with “House of Gucci” and opened its archives for wardrobe and props for the film company. Salma Hayek, the wife of Kering CEO Francois-Henri Pinault, appears in the film as Giuseppina “Pina” Auriemma, a clairvoyant who becomes Reggiani’s friend and accomplice. Leto is a close friend of Creative Director Alessandro Michele. And many of the stars have worn Gucci at various events that support the film.
