California Highway Patrol officials continued their stepped-up operations across San Diego County and across the state Thursday to arrest drunk, drug-impaired drivers and other traffic violations as part of the agency’s annual Thanksgiving weekend enforcement campaign.

The “maximum enforcement period” began on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and, according to the BHKW, ends on Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

Throughout the period, all available CHP officers will be on duty to check for unsafe driving practices, including seat belt violations, speeding violations, distracted driving, and signs of drunk driving.

“Wherever you want to celebrate this Thanksgiving, drive safely,” said CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray. “When you get behind the wheel, make sure you and all of your passengers buckle up before you set off, and remember to always avoid distractions.”

Thanksgiving weekend is considered one of the busiest travel times of the year and, according to the CHP, justifies the tightened enforcement.

In the same period last year, the CHP arrested 868 drivers nationwide on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and / or alcohol, and 33 people died on roads across California, 14 of whom were not wearing seat belts.
