Cardi B has won five American Music Awards in her career to date and has appeared on television. Next step: hosting the show.
The rapper behind hits like “Bodak Yellow” and “Money” was selected for the fan-voted awards show that will air on November 21 from Los Angeles on ABC.
“We’re thrilled to have the dynamic Cardi B bring her contagious energy to the American Music Awards as the first-time host,” said Executive Producer Jesse Collins in a statement on Tuesday.
Cardi B performed “I Like It” at the AMAs in 2018 with J Balvin and Bad Bunny and also made history during her last AMAs appearance, becoming the first female rapper to win favorite hip-hop song twice.
Olivia Rodrigo, for the first year she is eligible, is the lead nominee this time with seven candidates including Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year.
Five-time winner The Weeknd has six nominations and competes against Rodrigo in the Artist of the Year category alongside BTS, Ariana Grande, Drake and Taylor Swift.
Reggaeton star Bad Bunny, R&B newcomer Giveon and Doja Cat each have five nominations. Rodrigo Giveon, 24KGoldn, Masked Wolf and The Kid LAROI followed in the “New Artist of the Year” category.
Swift, who currently holds the record for the most distinguished artist in AMA history, could expand her streak further. She has been nominated for a total of three awards, including the most popular pop album for “evermore”.
The AMAs added new categories this year, including popular trending songs, popular gospel artists, and popular Latin duos or groups.
The rapper Pop Smoke, killed in 2020, is nominated in three categories, including Favorite Hip-Hop Album and Favorite Hip-Hop Artist, and could win his first award posthumously.
