San Diego’s Hot Thanksgiving Day Creates Wildfire Possibility, Forecasters Say – NBC 7 San Diego

A period of hot, dry weather and strong Santa Ana winds will add to the risk of forest fires in eastern San Diego County during the Thanksgiving holiday, forecasters said Monday.

Due to the risk of burns from the gusty, dry and unusually warm conditions for the time of year, the National Weather Service has issued a fire station that is valid from early Thursday morning to late Friday afternoon in the local mountains and inland valleys.

Combined with the heat creating critical wildfire weather conditions during the period, there will be sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph from the east – with gusts of 40 to 60 mph in some locations – and humidity as low as 10%.

The strongest winds will occur on Thursday, the NWS reported.

“As we get closer to Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, that high will come,” said NBC-7 meteorologist Sheena Parveen. “It will give us our Santa Ana winds. We will dry out, it will warm us up, but it will increase the risk of fire even more than last Sunday and Monday.”

“Aside from the conditions in Santa Ana, the weather to travel looks good,” said Parveen.

Those winds will then dissipate significantly and become more isolated on Friday, although high temperatures will remain 5 to 15 degrees above average over the weekend and early next week.
