Sean “Diddy” Combs’ charter school is moving to a larger campus in New York City.
The music mogul announced on Thursday that the Capital Preparatory School will move to the All Saints Church and the school building in the Harlem neighborhood. The move will increase the school’s capacity from 500 to 700 students in grades 6 to 12 from the 2022-2023 school year.
The school’s new campus will include 40 classrooms and offices, a sports room, science labs, a cafeteria, an outdoor communal courtyard, and an area called the “Great Hall” for all school meetings and performances.
“The children of Harlem should have access to opportunity and quality education and deserve to learn on a campus that reflects the level of excellence we want them to achieve,” Combs said in a statement. “This new campus for Capital Prep Harlem reflects my commitment to empowering as many children as possible and creating spaces where the next generation of leaders can thrive in every aspect of their lives.”
Combs founded the Harlem Charter School in 2016. A long-time education advocate, he donated $ 1 million to the Capital Preparatory Schools network for a new location in the Bronx that opened last year. He is a native of Harlem.
Built in 1883, the Church of All Saints and School was appointed by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2007. The parish and school were closed by the Archdiocese of New York in 2015 before the church was desecrated two years later.
“We are honored to revive a listed Harlem gem and to revive its original place as a community education center through our new campus,” said the school’s co-founder, Steve Perry, in a statement. “We pride ourselves on providing the children of Capital Prep Harlem with a prestigious New York City staple, a learning environment and space that reflects the history and beauty of the community we know and love.”
