Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have some damn good news to share.

The “thank u, next” singer and “Harriet” actress confirmed on Thursday that they will star in Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of the successful musical “Wicked”. According to Universal Pictures, Grande will portray the good witch Glinda, while Erivo will play the role of the misunderstood Elphaba.

Grande shared a photo of her Zoom call with her co-star and director on Instagram and wrote, “Thank God.”

The artist also posted a photo of the flowers Erivo had sent her with a note that read, “Pink goes well with green.” Congratulations Miss A, the role was made for you, I look forward to sharing this musical journey with you. “

The pop star returned the favor by sending a bouquet of white and green flowers and writing to her co-star, “Dear Cynthia, it’s not even honored. I can’t wait to give you a hug. See you in Oz.”

Erivo celebrated the news on her own Instagram page, capturing it with the same quote she sent to Grande.

As usual, Erivo’s Broadway friends congratulated her on the feat, with Anthony Ramos commenting on a series of fire emojis.

Style development by Ariana Grande

From the “dangerous woman” to the married woman! Ariana Grande shared a dreamy first look at the perfect Dalton Gomez wedding day.

Grande’s mother raved about her daughter’s Instagram page and commented: “Bursting with pride !!!!!! Thank God.”

Production is slated to begin in the UK next summer.

For years actresses have been campaigning for the coveted roles of dueling witches, most recently Amanda Seyfried and Anna Kendrick.

In April, Seyfried told the Variety’s Award Circuit podcast that she had sent Chu a recording of herself singing the song Popular in the hopes that it would get her the part. As she put it, “I’ve never been more ready to hit those notes.”

And if it had been up to Seyfried, “Les Misérables” actress Samantha Barks would have been her co-star. At that time Seyfried said: “There is no one like Samantha Barks. … Samantha is my number 1, I mean, there is no better singer in the world, I think.”

Anna Kendrick was her second choice for Elphaba because the “Pitch Perfect” star “can sing the high notes” required for the role. But as Seyfried also noted: “At some point it was Anne Hathaway too. She could obviously be Elphaba. “

Kendrick later spoke to E! News and revealed that she was unaware of Seyfried’s comments and admitted, “This is so funny. I hadn’t heard that before, but when I met her in real life, she said that to me. So I thought what are you doing overheard? this conversation? I didn’t know she said that. “

Kendrick added, “So she wasn’t just telling me in my face to be nice.”

Another actress who vied for the role of Elphaba on screen was Idina Menzel from “The Ice Queen”. After all, she won a Tony Award in 2004 for her Broadway portrayal of the witch.

When Variety asked Idina in 2019 about the upcoming ‘Wicked’ film, she was explicit: “I still think I should be Elphaba and I should just show up, put the green make-up on myself and get some CGI and Benjamin Button the s- – from the … I mean, I love you, Ariana, but I’m still relevant here. “

(E! News and Universal Pictures are both members of the NBCUniversal family.)
