SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Some young San Diegan residents had the opportunity to hear their voices from senior traffic officials in the area through a virtual town hall on Thursday.
“So there is currently no public transport near me. That means, if I have to travel a very long distance, I have to use the car, ”said Keala Minna-Choe, a youth participant at the Transportation Town Hall.
Several members of local student youth organizations spent their Thursday evening discussing the future of the agency’s regional plan with SANDAG board members.
The hope is to get greener, more accessible, and fairer public transportation to San Diego, things that some have dubbed the 10 lifelines of transportation.
Hopefully one of them will be free tickets for people under the age of 24.
“A lot of them – this is a very fair problem – may not be able to afford this public transport several times a day if they use public transport frequently,” said Minna-Choe.
“Many of our parishioners are young people, they are mothers, parents, single-family homes. So there are many people who are committed to these 10 lifelines in public transport “, Ariana Federico, a senior transport organizer for Mid City-CAN,
One of the SANDAG board members, county supervisor Terri Lawson-Remer, said needs are one thing, finding funding for them is another.
“But we have a problem, it all costs a lot of money. So if we’re serious about investing in these types of transportation solutions for our future, we need to figure out how to increase revenue, ”said Lawson-Remer.
Maybe it was just a conversation.
But there is hope that the words and thoughts of young people about public transport will become a reality in the future.
“There are students who are struggling to get where they need to go right now,” said Katie Meyer, campaign coordinator San Diego 350.
“While I am glad that many of the elected officials have the right ideas, it is vitally important that we have this urgency and ensure that improvements are made to transit now.”
SANDAG will vote on their regional plan on December 10th.
