‘Red Notice,’ ‘Squid Game’ Top Netflix Hours-Watched Metric – NBC 7 San Diego

Netflix launched a new website on Tuesday that measures its most watched movies and series by the number of hours users spend watching them. The results? People may watch “Squid Game” and the new action adventure movie “Red Notice” even more than expected.
According to the streaming service’s new metric, Rawson Marshall Thurber’s “Red Notice” starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds has been watched for 148.7 million hours worldwide since its November 12th debut on Netflix. Last week, the third season of “Narcos: Mexico” was the most popular series, with 50.3 million viewed hours.
The first season of “Squid Game” is the most watched Netflix series or movie of all time with 1.6 billion hours.
Every Tuesday, Netflix updates the “Top10 on Netflix” page with the top 10 series and films from the streaming service. Previously, Netflix has been selective in sharing viewer data. It occasionally has split views for hits and logs a top 10 list with no data on the service itself.
Although the hours watched metric replaces Netflix’s previous “views” which can be as little as a few minutes of a movie or series. Other major streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Disney + don’t publish regular viewer data.
Netflix’s metrics still don’t tell how many people actually saw something on the service, and it doesn’t include any movies or series that are outside of the top 10. But it’s the most transparent measurement Netflix has ever used.
“This is an important step forward for Netflix, the creators we work with and our members,” wrote Pablo Perez De Rosso, vice president of content strategy for Netflix, in a blog post Tuesday. “People want to understand what success means in a streaming world, and these lists are the clearest answer to that question in our industry.”
Netflix will publish both English and non-English rankings and top 10 lists for more than 90 countries. The company announced that it had hired the auditing company EY to check its figures.
At its current rate, Red Notice – which received largely poor reviews from critics – could become Netflix’s most popular movie of all time. That title is currently held by Sandra Bullock’s 2018 thriller Bird Box, which has 282 million viewed hours.
