SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – There are so many lessons from friends and neighbors who support one another, but a small nonprofit organization has been raising the lives of needy community members, student or family at a time, for decades.
Yolanda Castro’s family knows about struggles and sacrifices. Her parents came to the United States from central Mexico 95 years ago and were faced with the challenge of being able to afford food, clothing and basic necessities. But their work, perseverance and faith made it possible for them to overcome barriers and always make education a priority, they became a family of the first.
“We had to work. My dad, my mom, they worked hard what they could. We had to make a career or go to college, but we had to take care of ourselves,” said Castro, co-founder of Generations on the Move.
After almost 30 years in federal service, Castro founded Generations on the Move with her sister and cousins in 2009, a non-profit organization that aims to give young people the opportunity to realize their dream of college and helping their families with food and clothing.
Marci Corona has received a Generations on the Move scholarship that allows her to go to the state of San Diego. Now she is studying medicine with the aim of becoming a doctor. Jonathon Patsy got help from Generations on the Move to join UC Davis. The organization has given 59 scholarships to worthy high school graduates, and Castro has established an annual 5K to raise funds to send more.
“Our community, our neighborhoods … that’s what makes us strong. That we were ready to help each other, maybe we didn’t have the money, but we always found the money, ”said Castro.
Even if the money came out of your own pocket.
Castro describes Generations on the Move as a grassroots initiative to improve the lives of people like you. To date, the non-profit has improved the lives of 100 families and enabled their children to embark on a path to a new level of excellence for their families.
She believes people were there to help her family and now we need to help others.
For their work in creating a legacy for families that spans generations, ABC recognized 10News Castro with the 10News Leadership Award.
