Nov. 9 (Reuters) – The San Diego National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) expansion team, which will play as president next year with former U.S. women’s national coach Jill Ellis, will be known as the Wave Futbol Club, they said on Tuesday with.

Announced in June as the NWSL’s 12th top tier franchise, the team said the name was inspired by San Diego’s pristine and powerful coastline and diverse cultural heritage.

San Diego is the first NWSL franchise to use the Spanish translation of Futbol on its name.

“We’ve listened to soccer fans and community leaders, and we’re proud to choose a name that is related to the people and essence of San Diego,” Ellis said in a press release.

“A wave is a powerful symbol and, like our club, it’s an integral part of something bigger. Our players will be incredibly inspired to put on their shirts and play for the fans of San Diego Wave FC.”

The San Diego club, which will play its temporary home in 2022, said its crest and permanent venue will be revealed at a later date.

Casey Stoney, former Manchester United women boss, was named the first head coach of the San Diego team in July owned by Ron Burkle, who is a three-time Stanley Cup champion as a co-owner of the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins.
