Michelle Chavez’s goal is to help people get the legal advice they need.
She works for the San Diego County Bar Association as the director of public services.
The association is a professional organization for the legal community. Their job is to assist the public in finding qualified and insured lawyers for legal issues or in finding public funds. Through the various programs that Chavez oversees, the association helps thousands of people find the help they are looking for each year.
She has been with the club for 15 years. She leads the lawyer referral and information service, fee arbitration and various pro bono projects. For Chavez, a native of San Diegan, her upbringing influenced her career choices and volunteer work.
She attended a Catholic school where mission and teaching focused on helping people who were less fortunate than others. She remembers that her parents give people a lot. “We were taught to work hard and always give back to others,” she recalls.
Your social commitment is not limited to your employment. She is also actively involved in several chambers of commerce, the Better Business Bureau, and works with the New Lawyer Division of the San Diego County Bar Association on a variety of community projects. In everything she does, her goal is to let the community know what resources are available to them.
“I’ve always wanted to help others, be it helping them or educating them about community resources. When I started at SDCBA 15 years ago, I revamped the public programs. My goal was to spread the word about how the SDCBA can help the public. I wanted to take the fear people have when they are faced with a legal situation. There are many wonderful lawyers and agencies out there who can help individuals and provide relief to them and their families. “
Chavez said the association was recently certified as a legal intermediary service in Imperial County, where legal representation is limited.
“This is an important community for us and we want to expand the services for it,” she says.
Chavez added that most of the association’s programs and services are offered free of charge.
