Taylor Swift fans know how to look for careful clues and Easter eggs in their lyrics and music videos.
The 13-minute “All Too Well: The Short Film” didn’t disappoint. The Friday night release came shortly after Swift released her expanded and re-recorded album, Red (Taylor’s Version), which includes a 10-minute expanded version of All Too Well.
Prior to a fan screening, Swift told The Associated Press that she had decided to record a longer version of the song and make a mini-film because it was so popular with followers.
“This is all about what the fans made of that song,” Swift said on the red carpet. “It was never a single, never had a video, it never had a visual element, but they pretty much created their own imaginary cinematic universe for what you wanted.”
“Red” is a classic Swift album, originally released in 2012, with hits like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “22”. The superstar directed the short film “All Too Well” starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien.
Handkerchiefs labeled “All Too Well” were distributed to fans for use when needed.
Inside, Swift greeted the audience with “It’s been a while.” She then gave permission for any emotions that the film might evoke. “You and I are used to concerts,” said Swift. “We’re used to feeling how we feel and talking loudly about how we feel when we feel it. Just do this, feel your feelings. We have provided handkerchiefs. You don’t have to be stoic, serious, or anything that you aren’t, ”she said.
In the film, Sink and O’Brien play the fun and romance of a new relationship, problems and hurt feelings creep up and their eventual breakup.
A highlight begins with a dinner scene in which O’Brien’s character holds court while the guests laugh. Sink grabs O’Brien’s hand and he drops it. What follows is about a three-minute pause in the music for spoken dialogue while they argue over the dishes. O’Brien tells Sink that she’s doing something out of nowhere because she gets upset, which causes the audience to gasp and boo.
Swift told The AP that this part of the film was “not an autobiographical moment at all,” but was improvised.
“I think you can tell a lot about people when you see them arguing,” she said. “So we wanted to have a big fight. They knew what the argument was about, what the trigger was. That was something that was created for the film. “
After the screening, Swift brought O’Brien and Sink in front of the audience. “I’m sorry,” O’Brien joked about his on-screen behavior, winning the crowd back in his favor.
Swift also played an acoustic version of “All Too Well” for the room while strumming her guitar.
The new “All Too Well” was a top trending article on Twitter on Friday, and fans are indulging in the juicy details of the additional lyrics.
Though Swift hasn’t spoken out about what the song is about, Swiftie detectives have targeted actor Jake Gyllenhaal as the likely boyfriend who broke her heart years ago.
Swift re-recorded her first six albums because her original masters were being sold by her previous label and she wanted to create new masters that she could own. “Red (Taylor’s Version)” was released Friday with an expanded 30 songs, including duets with Ed Sheeran, Chris Stapleton and Phoebe Bridgers.
“I’m going to look back on this music and just see music and see art and see experiences that I’ve had at concerts,” said Swift of the re-recording of her music. “It was mine and now it’s really shared between me and the fans and that’s what I really took away from that experience.”
