ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) – Attendance at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas is expected to surge this week as two corpse flowers bloom.

It only takes 48 hours for fully open bloom to begin to fade. In order to honor the characteristic scent of the flower, SDBG nicknamed the second flower “Stinking Beauty” and it can be viewed with special extended opening times:

  • Friday, November 19 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 20th from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We are delighted that our second corpse flower, Stinking Beauty, is blooming into its sister plant in such quick succession,” said Ari Novy, President and CEO of SDBG. “For anyone who missed Jack Smellington’s fragrant bloom on Halloween, this is a rare second chance to see this elusive plant in bloom.”

The corpse flower, Amorphophallus titanum, comes from Indonesia. It is known for its putrid smell, described as rotting meat. The smell is enhanced by the heat of the plant’s inflorescence.
