UC San Diego to ease COVID-19 travel guidance for students heading home for Thanksgiving

As the pandemic increased nationwide, UC San Diego begged students last November to get tested for COVID-19 before heading out for the Thanksgiving holiday to avoid accidentally spreading the virus at family gatherings.

Infection rates are now falling in much of the country, and the embassy at San Diego County’s largest university is very different.

“We’re going to be a little more revealing this time as our students are 96 percent vaxxted and only test them on return and 5 days later – or for symptoms,” said Dr. Robert “Chip” Schooley. Director of the school’s Return to Learn campaign.

The University of California’s system requires that all students, faculty, and staff accessing campus be vaccinated against the virus.

Last year, UCSD was among the first major universities in the country to extensively test students, faculty and staff for COVID-19. This contributed to the continued low infection rate. As of October 31, the student rate was 0.23 percent.

The university has managed to keep the rate down, despite enrollments up nearly 2,400 this fall, hitting a record of 42,875.
