National City Opens New Food Hall with Diverse Flavors, Vendors – NBC 7 San Diego

What foodie could do in San Diego County’s new restaurant opened as South Bay’s first food hall on Monday after the anticipation of a pandemic-induced setback was high.
Developed in part by Joel Tubao, who grew up in South Bay himself, Market on 8th has 14 different vendors offering a range of delicious dishes from Cajun BBQ, Filipino cuisine, calming coffee and more.
“The community just deserved this,” Tubao told NBC 7. “South Bay deserves this, National City deserves this, so we’re going to have a number of food vendors here serving the public.”
The 11,000 square meter food hall rests where there was once a furniture store. It has a beer garden, colorful wall art, and multiple vendors who are also from South Bay.
“I think they will have an experience of what a national city is and what we all are here,” said Bobby Alfonso, owner of Cafe Indonesia. “We are a diverse community, like a melting pot.”

Fourteen new restaurants are slated to open in Market on the 8th next week, NBC 7’s Amber Frias reports.
Originally, it was supposed to open in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic pushed these plans aside as the food hall had to cease construction for more than a year. Fortunately, things got back on track and the project, although delayed by 19 months, was able to materialize.
“Because of this, it took us longer to complete and set up, but we’re here now and we’re excited to open today,” said Moe Ebrahimi, owner of Moe’s Coffee.
The people of National City will have their own space created by one of their own natives.
“We’ll keep the people here. We will keep the jobs here, ”said Tubao of the melting pot of cultures under one roof. “We’re going to let the people live here in the church and hope to capture much of the church that is returning to National City and South Bay.”
