San Diego’s Tuetano Taqueria Chef Opening Mexican Seafood Restaurant, Mar Rustico, in Old Town

Chef Priscilla Curial from Michelin-acclaimed Tuetano Taqueria opens a new restaurant in the Old Town Urban Market that focuses on Mexican-style seafood. Curiel calls it Mar Rustico and says it was inspired by the Baja California Sur region and the time it spent at a restaurant in La Paz, Mexico.
Curiel will close the original Tuetano Taqueria location in San Ysidro and move it to the Old Town Market, where the Birria spot is next to the Mar Rustico, on Sunday October 24th. Their seasonal menu for the new restaurant includes tuna machaca and smoked marlin burritos, as well as seafood guisados or stews and seafood tostadas. Non-seafood options include grilled meat and beet ceviche. The bar will start with wine and beer, but Curiel hopes to have cocktails at some point.
The 7,000-square-foot outdoor seating venue will eventually house seven grocery vendors and two retail tenants, including Ruth’s No. 5, a San Diego-based salsa company. Shannen El-Qasem, operations director of the Old Town Urban Market, tells Eater that they are still completing the rest of the lineup for the remaining stalls, but says coffee, wine, pizza, empanadas, and gelato are all controversial. The store, which is slated to open in late autumn or early winter, also plans to have space for the presentation of pop-ups from local businesses.
