Chef Steve Brown expands Swagyu Burger and Chop Shop
Well-known local chef Steve Brown is bringing his Wagyu beef butcher and burger concept to Pacific Beach, where it will replace Isabel’s, the longtime restaurant on Felsspar Street owned by cook and cookbook author Isabel Cruz. Last year Cruz gave Brown the space for outdoor dinners and a pop-up butcher shop, but now it will be a permanent home for Brown. Opened in June, Swagyu Burger will combine a casual burger bar and meat counter with a dining room where the chef hosts his 12-course tasting dinners.
The Rose reopens in South Park with a new menu and cocktails
South Park’s popular wine bar, The Rose, returns with an Argentine-inspired menu and brand new cocktail menu. Co-owner Chelsea Coleman, who co-founded a local natural wine festival, also curated a wine box for the Eater Wine Club that contains a bottle made right here in San Diego.
Comedian George Lopez brings virtual taqueria to San Diego
The George Lopez Tacos, which arrives in San Diego next month, is a delivery eatery sponsored by Lopez, a well-known actor and comedian who also runs a number of restaurants called Chingon Kitchen. The menu includes street tacos as well as french fries and salsa, as well as churro canapes. The concept falls into the world of virtual or “ghost” kitchens, a trend that really took off during the pandemic.
Juniper & Ivy Begins Nationwide Search for New Chef

Kearny Mesa dumpling experts headed north
Joyee’s Dumpling House, which specializes in handmade dumplings and rolls, from Potstickers to Xiao Long Bao, will open another location in the 4S Commons Town Center this June. The Chinese restaurant plans to expand to Karlovy Vary this fall as well.
