Fleet Week is back in San Diego, recognizing the contributions and sacrifices the armed forces have made to the greater San Diego community.
Starting at noon on Wednesday, the San Diego Police Department will provide a motorcycle escort for a convoy of marine equipment making the journey from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to Broadway Pier.
“[The SDPD escort] is further proof of the great support the city has given the military in San Diego, “said Larry Blumberg, executive director of Fleet Week San Diego, in a press release released this week.
In addition to being a special honor, the escort will help facilitate transportation of the heavy equipment through downtown San Diego.
The convoy’s equipment is on display on Broadway Pier throughout the week.
Nearly 1,500 San Diego students are expected at Broadway Pier Thursday and Friday to attend Student STEM Day, where they will see the equipment firsthand.
The students receive detailed views of new and emerging technologies in the military and civil fields. You also have the opportunity to learn more about STEM training programs. Registration is required for the event.
The Freedom-class inshore attack ship USS Fort Worth and USCG cutter Benjamin Bottoms will also arrive at Broadway Pier on Wednesday.

Greetings to the service
NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 are proud to host one of San Diego’s biggest celebrations, the Salute to Service Festival aboard the USS Midway Museum. The event is to celebrate the military families in our community who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.
The event at the USS Midway Museum on the Embarcadero is free for all active members, reservists, National Guardsmen, veterans and their families. Just show your military ID and celebrate with your family.
NBC 7 usually hosts our big Salute to Service festival on Veterans Day, but because of the pandemic, we had to find a creative way to celebrate during Military Family Appreciation Month, reports NBC 7 military reporter Bridget Naso.
Guests at the event, which starts at 10 a.m. and runs through 3 p.m., will enjoy live music by The Wild Side Band and kids’ activities, as well as free food and drink samples. Visit the NBC 7 and Telemundo 20 booth for games and prizes.
