“The university has long been committed to reducing our carbon footprint while supporting healthy, efficient transit options for a large and diverse campus population,” said Gary Matthews, vice chancellor, resource management and planning, UC San Diego. “With the combined services of Spin and TransLoc, the university is reducing its CO2 emissions, taking advantage of our investments in traffic and making it easier for lecturers, students and employees to take the final stage of commuting in the next few years.”
Spin’s relationship with UC San Diego began in 2017 with 50 shared pedal bikes on campus. This new agreement brings 600 shared e-bikes and e-scooters to campus, enhanced by a network of Spin Hub charging stations that contain digital screens that show riders real-time campus transit data to help them better plan their trip. In the first month of this fall quarter alone, the campus community made more than 63,000 trips totaling more than 53,000 miles.
“Our mission at Spin is to use micromobility to create a 15-minute city – where anyone can get to any important location within 15 minutes.” called Ben bear, Spin CEO. “College campuses like UC San Diego really work like small towns, and working with TransLoc will help us achieve our goal of making transportation easier.”
TransLoc’s transportation orchestration software will support UC San Diego’s existing transportation system to more efficiently dispatch and track more than 40 buses along fixed routes on campus to provide passengers with real-time data on bus status, location and capacity . Next year, TransLoc software will also power UC San Diego’s minibuses and low-speed electric vehicles to provide door-to-door on-campus and on-demand services across campus for students, faculty and staff with mobility issues -Community to be provided during the evenings, outside of rush hour, when full-sized buses would not be sustainable.
“The future of transportation is not about single mode travel, it is about offering affordable, accessible and easy-to-use options that complement each other and enhance the driving experience,” said Ford Vice President of Mobility Businesses and TransLoc CEO Brett Wheatley. “This is just the beginning of how Ford, Spin and TransLoc can help improve and future-proof mobility systems in the US. We look forward to supporting the holistic mobility needs of UC San Diego today and in the future.”
As this collaboration begins with UC San Diego, Spin and TransLoc see significant opportunities to expand this mobility suite to corporate premises, communities, airports, and more.
