WASHINGTON (AP) – Federal officials said Monday they are calling for fines of more than $ 160,000 on eight passengers for incidents involving alcohol.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the largest proposed fine of over $ 40,000 affects a passenger who brought alcohol on the plane and drank, smoked marijuana on the toilet and sexually assaulted a flight attendant on a Southwest Airlines jet in April .

Police arrested the passenger after the plane from San Jose, Calif. Landed in San Diego and accused the person of defying the arrest and public drunkenness, the FAA said. Why the passenger was not charged with assault was unclear. The FAA has no authority to file criminal charges.
The FAA did not identify any of the eight passengers, who face a total of $ 161,823 in civil fines, despite having the right to contest the allegations. In some cases, flight crews rerouted flights in order to land faster due to the unpredictable behavior of passengers.

The proposed fines represent the latest volley in the FAA’s attempt to crack down on recalcitrant passengers on airplanes, an issue that became much more common from January onwards. Airlines reported more than 5,000 incidents of recalcitrant passengers to the FAA this year.
Most of the incidents involved passengers who refused to comply with the federal obligation for passengers to wear face masks on airplanes, but nearly 300 drunk passengers were involved, according to the FAA.
