A fast-casual concept with Filipino classics has arrived at the Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station. Eater San Diego has an overview of this new place as well as other top stories of the week from our local food and drink scene.
White Rice is launched in the Liberty Public Market
Local chef Phillip Esteban, who already runs a ramen shop in the Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station, has just unveiled a new booth with Filipino silong or rice bowls. The place called White Rice tops its rice bowls with everything from crispy pork belly to grilled chicken skewers. Also on the menu: traditional snacks such as Ube Pandesal and Lumpia Shanghai.
Esteban – a native of the National City who also appeared on “Chopped” on the Food Network – was a guest on our podcast scene in San Diego last fall and talked to us about his many local culinary projects. Esteban is also part of the team at Open Gym, a local group that runs Craft Meals Catering and focuses on making a positive impact in San Diego through local food. He has teamed up with Pete Halmay – the director of Tuna Harbor Dockside Market in San Diego – to help bring his mission to life.

Midwestern chain that brings cheesesteaks and hoagies to San Diego
Founded in Detroit, Lefty’s Famous Cheesesteaks, Hoagies & Grill is preparing for a major expansion in Southern California, including 25 locations in San Diego County alone. The laid-back sandwich chain begins with a flagship outpost in the Gaslamp, where it replaces the burger lounge on 5th Avenue.
Southeast Asian restaurant in North Park
Former chef and co-owner of Oceanside’s acclaimed Dija Mara will open Hoxton Manor on University Avenue in the former Breakfast Company building this month. Combining SoCal sensitivity with Asian ingredients, the menu will highlight the cuisine of Vietnam, Thailand, and the surrounding area, while the bar will focus on gin cocktails and natural wines.
Where to drink cocktails now
The latest monthly update to the Eater Cocktail Heatmap, also known as a New Bars and Fresh Cocktail Lists Guide, includes a recently opened rooftop bar at Oceanside’s Mission Pacific Hotel, as well as a popular Normal Heights Bar, Sycamore Den, whose newest cocktail menu features drinks that can be made as alcohol-free versions.
Meal service with sliding price scales will be expanded to San Diego
Los Angeles-based Everytable has arrived in San Diego with a meal subscription service delivered from its central LA kitchen. The company is also looking for locations across San Diego for its take-out store fronts, where individually packaged meals cost anywhere from $ 5 to $ 9, depending on the average household income of each neighborhood.
